Former Team India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh suggested that the Gautam Gambhir-led team management focus on building a set team in the lead-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup. In recent times, the Indian cricket team management has made a lot of changes across all the formats.
Some of the changes in the playing combinations were forced changes because of multiple injury setbacks. Whatever the reasons might be, Yuvraj Singh urged the team management to put all of their focus in buildng a same team in a year, as last-minute changes can dent the team's actual plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The former cricketer suggested keeping a group of 16 to 20 players ready for the tournament, with an ample amount of game time for all of the selected members. Yuvraj observed that nowadays there are more T20I matches than ODI matches.
No matter which format the team is asked to perform in, ensuring game time for all of the players who are bound to play the 2027 ODI World Cup is necessary for the betterment of the team.
"They need to focus on building the same team to play in a year, because you don't want to make big changes at the last moment. Whoever your players are, whether they are 16 or 20, everybody must get game time because obviously now there are more T20s and less 50-over cricket. Whatever matches there are, players must get enough game time to prepare for the World Cup," Yuvraj told Cricinfo.
"Every time India has faltered is when they've made some massive changes at the last moment or in the tournament. So I think it's important that we stick to a team that we believe can lift the 2027 World Cup and stick by those guys whether they fail or succeed till that moment. Belief in the squad is very important," he adds.
Yuvraj Singh asks Team India to move step by step
Yuvraj Singh also stated that the Men in Blue should take well-measured steps to confirm a berth in the final of the competition. He first asked the team to ensure playing in the semi-finals, before thinking about the final match.
Yuvraj emphasized that the Indian cricket team is consistent in the white-ball formats, but to win the trophy, they will have to show fighting spirit throughout the tournament.
Yuvraj Singh mentions Australia as a strong side
In his assessment, Yuvraj Singh mentioned that the Australian cricket team will be another contender to win the 2027 ODI World Cup,p with their history of winning ICC trophies, backed by multiple match-winners.
"We have had a lot of consistency in white-ball cricket. They need to think of first qualifying for the semis and then going on to play in the last two [knockout matches]. I think that's a long way ahead. The focus should be on getting the squad ready, who's together and ready to fight in any situation," Yuvraj said.
"That's the reason why Australia have been successful, because I believe that the Australian side, whenever they won World Cups, they've had a lot of match-winners who individually can pull off a game, and on a specific day, one does the job, and when they're all in trouble, they together pull it off."
