Sectionals finalist Garreth Thomas will be sticking close to home next season, as he has announced his verbal commitment to swim for Ball State University in Indiana beginning in the fall of 2027.
“I am very very excited to announce my commitment to Ball State! When I first got contacted by Ball State, it was just after my dad said his coaching buddy Jay was just telling him about how he thought I could be a good fit to the team. I had plenty of fun calls with Coach James Boone, he made me feel like I was valued as a person more than just a swimmer. Then when I visited Ball State’s campus, it made me feel like the entire team valued me that way as well. My host Henry Ko was super into everything we did together; we played cards until midnight, and we even were lucky enough to go to a carnival that happened to be in town at the time of the visit. I love everything the swim team stood for, and I am overjoyed that I will be able to be a part of that soon.”
The Indiana native recently began his senior year at Westfield High School, where he has been a member of the varsity swimming and diving team for the past three years. Thomas also currently trains year-round with Westfield Aquatics; a versatile threat in the water, he excels at free, breast, fly and IM.
At the NAC Timedrop Music City Invitational in December, Thomas threw down a series of fast swims. He logged new personal best times in five events: the 100 breast (58.25), 200 breast (2:03.75), 200 fly (1:51.55), 200 IM (1:53.47) and 400 IM (4:00.48). He also contested the 100 fly (51.33), marking a season-best time.
Thomas improved upon his times at the Indiana Senior Swimming Championships in March. He won the 1000 free (9:34.66 – PB) and snagged the runner-up spot in the 200 fly (1:49.17 – PB) and the 400 IM (3:55.74) after setting a best time of 3:55.71 during the prelims of the 400 IM. He also placed 3rd in the 200 free (1:42.84) and 6th in the 200 breast (2:03.12 – PB), and he set lifetime best times in the 100 free (48.13) and 200 free (1:41.91) as the leadoff on the 400 free relay and 800 free relay, respectively.
A few weeks later, Thomas raced at the Indianapolis Sectionals (LCM), where he earned a second swim in all five of his individual events. He placed 11th in the 200 fly (2:07.39) and 400 IM (4:36.97), 14th in the 200 IM (2:11.11), 16th in the 200 breast (2:24.89) and 25th in the 100 fly (57.67), clocking a personal best time in each.

Based on the results from the 2026 MVC Championships, Thomas would have landed in the ‘B’ final in the 200 fly, 200 breast, 200 IM and 400 IM, setting him up to be a top contributor right from the start. With six senior swimmers on the Cardinals’ roster this season, Thomas will help fill the gaps left behind when they leave the team.
“I can’t imagine a team with a better atmosphere and bond, I know I will be more than happy to swim with such an amazing group of people and push myself towards success in my career,” Thomas said.
The only other recruit currently confirmed to be joining Thomas in Muncie next fall is fellow Indiana native Caden Askren, who specializes in distance free and IM and should make for a strong training partner over the course of their collegiate careers.
