In a recent post shared to her Instagram, Knight announced she’ll be taking a step back from touring after completing her upcoming shows. “After heartfelt discussions with my team, I recognize that no matter how much I love lifting spirits in song, it’s time for the midnight train to make just a few more stops. I’m finishing the year strong with my remaining performances. Looking forward to new ventures next year. Again, I am so very grateful for all the love and support over the years. God bless all of you,” the statement read.
This is her second statement regarding the tour, following her son speaking publicly about feeling his mother is being forced to perform by her husband/manager, William McDowell. Her son has accused his stepfather of abuse.
Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson told the Detroit News that he worries about his mother and accuses McDowell of taking advantage of her. “My belief and fear is that he intends to literally try to work her until she passes away. And you can quote me on that,” he told the outlet. Knight previously denied her son’s claims. They’ve had a difficult relationship at times, with her suing her son and them settling outside of court over her name and likeness linked to her now-closed Georgia eatery, Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffles.
In a previous social media post, Knight said she’ll be spending more time performing local shows near her home/region and spending time with her grandchildren. Knight’s husband and manager also told media outlets that he will ensure she’s seen by a doctor once the next three tour stops are complete.
