Those seven strikeouts are obviously the best component of the day, but don’t sleep on the eight groundouts. Fun fact: over his last eight starts, Peterson’s groundball rate is a whopping 58.5%. For context, Cristopher Sanchez has baseball’s best groundball rate this year as a starter, and it’s 58.2%. Heck, there are just four qualified starters above 50%.

My gut says that if the Cubs needed a fourth starter in the playoffs (i.e., reached the NLDS), David Peterson would be under heavy consideration for that spot, even ahead of Shota Imanaga. There’s probably an argument to have him in the mix with that front three (Clay Holmes, Kevin Gausman, Matthew Boyd), but I suspect his ability to pitch out of the bullpen will probably lead to him being available in that capacity in the Wild Card round.

Peterson, who’ll almost certainly be approached by the Cubs for a new deal this offseason, has nothing but great things to say about his manager and his teammates:
