After years of active development, The Princess Bride stage musical is officially set to premiere in Chicago in 2027.
According to Playbill, The Princess Bride‘s long-planned stage adaptation will play at Chicago’s Nederlander Theatre from July 19 to August 22 next year. If so successful, it’s safe to assume the play will eventually find its way to the Great White Way of Broadway somewhere down the line.
The creative team behind the project includes the Academy Award-winning composers of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Frozen), with a book by Tony winner Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone) and Rick Elice (Peter and the Starcatcher).
Overseeing the show’s direction is Tony winner Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!), with choreography by Tony winner Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton).
Referring to the project, lead producer Jeffrey Seller (Hamilton) said, “I read The Princess Bride in college and thought it could be a musical … So it’s no exaggeration to say I have been wanting to do this show for 40 years.”
As of yet, casting for the show has not been announced.
Based on the fantasy novel of the same name by William Goldman, The Princess Bride tells the unlikely love story between a farm boy-turned-seafaring pirate and a fair princess named Buttercup. Mixing comedy, romance, adventure and fantasy together into one overstuffed package, the book has won a consistently positive response since its initial release in 1973.
Over a decade later, the book gained renewed exposure thanks to a wildly successful adaptation by Rob Reiner. Starring Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, André the Giant, Wallace Shawn, and Billy Crystal, the 1987 film remains a beloved classic of modern film, as well as one of the most popular movies ever directed by Reiner.
Over the years, several attempts to adapt The Princess Bride into a musical have come and gone, including an attempt in 2006 by Goldman and Light in the Piazza composer Adam Guettel.
