Michael J. Fox received a rare doubling standing ovation for his recent appearance at the 78th Emmy Awards on September 14.
Accepting the prestigious Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, Fox was formally acknowledged for his decades of work raising awareness for people living with Parkinson’s disease, as well as for advancing research into the medical condition.
As he took to the stage, the audience in attendance rose to their feet to applaud for Fox, with his former Good Wife co-star Julianna Margulies presenting him with the award.
Accepting the honor, Fox went out of his way to thank his wife of 30 years, Tracy Pollan, as well as their four adult children: Sam, Aquinnah, Schuyler and Esmé.
“I thank Tracy and our kids for their sacrifices, for their patience and for their love. You have no idea,” he said, similarly thanking his parents and siblings.
Moving ahead, Fox spoke about his initial reactions to being diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and the original worries he had over how the disease might affect his career.
“Initially, I kept my Parkinson’s diagnosis a secret,” the Back to the Future star said. “I worried that it would affect my work and my relationships with audiences. Would they laugh if they knew I was sick?”
After realizing how supportive his friends, family members and coworkers were when it came to addressing the condition, Fox felt confident enough to continue raising awareness about the disease.
“All of you are so uplifting and just made me feel like I could keep doing this,” Fox said. “I hadn’t lost what I do, and it couldn’t take it away from me. And it’s because you stood up for me.”
As he concluded his speech, the crowd in the Peacock Theater rose back to their feet to once again applaud Fox, marking his second standing ovation of the night.
