ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester firefighter met the woman whose life he saved through a stem cell donation.
Years ago, Rochester firefighter Cody Duge donated stem cells. In 2024, his stem cells were used in a bone marrow transplant for cancer survivor Crystal Cornelius at a hospital in Chicago. The two came face-to-face on Monday for the first time at a ceremony hosted by the Chicago Fire Department.
“My mother had cancer when she was younger, so whenever there’s something to do with cancer, I try to see what’s going on,” Duge said.
“I was so excited, I was waiting for this day for a very long time,” Cornelius said.
