ITV has responded after Big Brother housemate Charlotte Nott ran into trouble making her entrance during Sunday's launch show, saying the moment was caused by an "unforeseen issue with her shoe" rather than any lack of preparation.
Nott, an 18-year-old student from Oxford and a quadruple amputee, was introduced to viewers for the first time on the ITV2 launch on Sunday 13 September, in which she spoke about losing her hands and feet to meningitis at the age of three.
As she made her way towards the house, cameras showed her struggling with her footwear before host Will Best went over to help. Charlotte was heard saying she needed to take off her prosthetic legs, and when she was next seen being interviewed by Best and co-host AJ Odudu she was without them.
"My shoe came off, I'm so sorry, I had to take my legs off," she told the hosts, with Odudu telling her she had "nothing to apologise for".
The moment prompted questions among some viewers about how accessible the house was, while others praised Charlotte's openness.
Addressing the moment, ITV said preparations had been made with Charlotte well in advance. "Prior to Charlotte's entrance to the house, we worked closely with her and a specialist access co-ordinator to understand her access requirements and agree, with her, the arrangements for her entrance and time in the house," a spokesperson said in a statement.
"A plan was put in place based on those discussions and agreed with Charlotte; however, she had an unforeseen issue with her shoe."
ITV added that Charlotte had been offered the use of a ramp for her entrance but chose to use the stairs, and that she had rehearsed the entrance with Best before the show went live. A number of adjustments were also made to the house itself, in collaboration with the show's specialist access co-ordinator, to make it more accessible.
In her introduction package, Charlotte spoke candidly about how she is perceived. "People stare at me, people even take pictures of me. And I forget," she said, before joking about the world not being built for people like her.
Charlotte is one of the housemates living under Big Brother's watchful eye this series, which is hosted once again by Odudu and Best. The launch also revealed a twist in which one housemate had secretly entered as a mole tasked with causing chaos.
