After seeing singer Meat Loaf perform in 1981, Welsh powerhouse Bonnie Tyler sought out his writer, Jim Steinman, in order to work with her on her next project. Tyler aimed to create work in the style of Phil Spector, who had largely retired, and believed Steinman was the only producer in the business who could help her accomplish that goal.
In 1982, Steinman played multiple tracks for Tyler, including the power ballad, “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” After Steinman played Tyler the song, she was eager to get into the studio and lay down the recording, saying, “I just had shivers right up my spine…I couldn’t wait to actually get in and record it.”
According to Meat Loaf, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” had been written for his album Midnight at the Lost and Found, but following a payment dispute between his label and Steinman, the songs ended up going to different artists. Both Tyler and Steinman have vehemently denied this claim, with Tyler saying of the allegations, “Meat Loaf was apparently very annoyed that Jim gave that to me. But Jim said he didn’t write it for Meat Loaf, that he only finished it after meeting me.”
At over seven minutes long, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” had to be shortened significantly as a single for radio play. The radio version was cut down to just four minutes and 30 seconds, with the music video clocking in at five minutes and 34 seconds.
“Total Eclipse of the Heart” became Tyler’s highest-charting single in multiple countries. The song peaked at number one in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Over the years, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” has become one of the best-selling singles of all time, selling over 13 million copies worldwide.
Critics have called the track “one of the finest ballads to ever hit the radio” and “”rock at its most melodramatic.” As of 2026, the song is one to have surpassed more than a billion streams on Spotify.
Following Tyler’s death in July of 2026, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” re-entered the UK Singles Chart, where it peaked at number 26.
