Harry and Meghan look happy. But the icy silence from certain royals is ominous

Little has changed. And yet, so much has changed.

The latest Instagram glimpse into the world of the Sussexes once again offers snippets of a family looking relaxed. This time, though, there are welly boots, splashy puddles and log fires instead of summer frocks, surfing and eternal sunshine.

But the underlying message, if one is intended, remains the same: Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex walking hand in hand, are happily married, and their children, Archie and Lilibet, are like any other kids – perfectly content as long as they can ride their bikes and run free.

The Sussexes are adapting to life back in the UK.

Buckingham Palace can protest as much as it likes that the Duke and Duchess are now merely “private citizens”. But with Meghan’s social media following of almost five million people worldwide, they are hardly ordinary ones. Whatever their official status, they remain “public figures”. And with that comes a level of scrutiny – and criticism – that many people might find hard to bear.

Meghan must be aware that poll after poll returns negative opinions about her. And Harry fares only a little better. It takes a fair bit of courage, or sheer audacity, to walk back into such a hostile environment.

But they’ve clearly been given the warmest of welcomes by the Spencer side of the family. The late Diana, Princess of Wales’s brother and two sisters have never lost touch with Harry. Their loyalty to him is uncomplicated. He is their nephew and they want him and his family to be part of their lives.

Sadly, the same cannot be said of the Windsors. King Charles has adopted a dual approach of taking tentative steps towards reconciliation, with a private invitation to Highgrove, combined with a public slap-down putting the Sussexes firmly in their place. His letter clarifying that they are not part of “The Firm” – the working royals – and should not be regarded as such carried quite a sting. Nothing, the Palace insisted, had changed. But, in truth, it had. The King had publicly flexed his muscles and decreed how his younger son should be treated: no bells, whistles, curtseys or any other show of royal flummery.

What hasn’t changed is the icy silence from the Prince and Princess of Wales. Do they take an interest in the Duchess’s Instagram posts? Are they curious about how Archie and Lilibet are settling into their new surroundings and their new school? Probably not. But, with diary clashes looming as Harry resumes his charity work, the family feud is going to become harder to ignore. Surely, there will eventually have to be some form of communication?

In the few weeks that the Sussexes have been back in the UK, there have been precious few sightings of them. So far, Meghan’s fears of paparazzi poking their cameras around every corner and staking out the school gates have proved groundless. Plenty of people know where the children are at school; they’ve been seen in playgrounds and the Duchess has been spotted having coffee. No one has published a picture and no one appears to have intruded on their privacy. It’s a promising start and it must be reassuring.

And yet, despite the autumnal country idyll of her latest post, I can’t help feeling that a new drama is never far away. Let’s hope I’m wrong.
