Garth Brooks has some “breaking news” for fans, but this time, it isn’t a new tour date or album announcement.
The country superstar shared an emotional open letter after wrapping up the latest shows on his Blame It All on My Roots Tour, attempting to describe something he says he’s never experienced before in decades of performing.
“Something is happening on this tour,” Brooks wrote.
The 64-year-old singer said the feeling began at Milwaukee’s Summerfest and continued through London’s Hyde Park, Indianapolis, Denver and his most recent shows outside Chicago. He wondered whether the difference could be the completely live nature of the performances, writing that there are “no loops, no prerecorded stuff,” just music in all its imperfections.
But even Brooks doesn’t seem entirely sure how to explain what he’s experiencing.
“In all my years, I have never ‘felt’ what I’ve been feeling this year in the live arena,” he wrote, describing both joy and tears among the audiences.
Brooks went on to wonder whether what he’s witnessing is a sense of unity created when thousands of people who may have little else in common suddenly begin singing the same words together.
“This is NOT a promotion for the tour,” he stressed. “Second, this has nothing to do with Garth Brooks.”
Instead, Brooks said he’s simply grateful to be part of whatever is happening, adding that seeing and feeling it has left him feeling “full.” He closed the message by thanking God and his fans.
The letter was inspired by fellow country singer-songwriter Ward Davis, who attended one of Brooks’ recent concerts and subsequently struggled to put the experience into words himself.
Davis recalled learning Brooks’ music on piano as a child and said those songs helped set him on the path toward becoming a musician. Decades later, seeing Brooks perform brought all those memories rushing back.
“Honestly, I wept for most of the show,” Davis wrote in the emotional post, adding that he felt as though his “whole life” flashed before his eyes.
Brooks’ current Blame It All on My Roots Tour launched Aug. 20 in Indianapolis and marks his return to traditional indoor arenas after years of stadium shows and his Las Vegas residency. The production deliberately recalls his massive 1990s arena tours, complete with a 360-degree stage and an updated version of his famous overhead drum pod.
Whatever Brooks is feeling from the stage, judging by Davis’ reaction, at least some of the people in the audience are feeling it, too.
