VIENNA — Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman emphasized that the Saudi nuclear program is peaceful and transparent, not hidden deep in mountains or bunkers. “Our nuclear program is based on the principles of transparency and adherence to international standards. Saudi Arabia is working with complete transparency and will continue to do so in cooperation with its partners and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),” he said while addressing the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA70) in Vienna on Monday.Prince Abdulaziz noted that there is some misunderstanding regarding certain aspects of Saudi Arabia’s nuclear agreements, affirming that the Kingdom continues to operate in accordance with the relevant regulatory frameworks and international obligations. Prince Abdulaziz emphasized that Saudi Arabia has strengthened its position as a reliable supplier and active partner in global energy markets and continues to invest its diverse resources in the energy and mining sectors, noting that integrating nuclear energy into the national energy mix has become essential. The minister affirmed that the Kingdom is moving forward with building a comprehensive national energy mix, including nuclear energy. “The National Atomic Energy Project is advancing a program to explore uranium resources and assess opportunities for their economic utilization through several interconnected practices. Diversifying energy sources while ensuring their reliability and sustainability has become essential to supporting economic growth and security of supply, particularly amid accelerating global energy demand driven by economic, technological, and industrial expansion,” he said. Prince Abdulaziz emphasized that the Kingdom is not developing its nuclear program in isolation from the international community, but is continuing to strengthen its national and regulatory frameworks for nuclear energy while maintaining complete transparency with its partners in the energy and mining sectors. He pointed out that the integration of nuclear energy into the national energy mix is being carried out within a robust regulatory framework aligned with the Kingdom’s international obligations. Prince Abdulaziz affirmed that the Kingdom possesses vast mineral wealth and is committed to ensuring secure mineral supply chains, developing rare earth mineral discoveries, and transforming these resources into sustainable economic value. He noted that the Kingdom is continuing its uranium exploration efforts and working to extract associated uranium as part of the fertilizer manufacturing process. He explained that exploration and geological studies at the Jabal Sayid project in Madinah have revealed estimated resources of approximately 110 million tons of ore with high concentrations of rare earth minerals, particularly heavy elements, along with promising uranium deposits.
