PENFIELD, N.Y. — People were forced to leave their homes overnight after a water main break caused sinkholes near an apartment complex in Penfield.

At the top of a slope, a large sinkhole is visible, and at the bottom, mud is pooling up. Video shows a white car swallowed up by a sinkhole. Deputies say the water main break, which started around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, caused two large sinkholes.
“We’ve never had issues like that since we lived here,” said Kevin Overdyk, who lives at the apartment complex.
The Monroe County Water Authority shut the water off at the apartments. The Red Cross was called in to help. Penfield code enforcement deemed some of the apartments unlivable because of the damage and ordered residents to evacuate. Check back for updates.
