Right-hander Logan Webb has been the Giants’ ace for almost six years now, but he’s been pretty inconsistent recently, to the point the team is considering shutting him down for the remainder of the season. Giants manager Tony Vitello told reporters, including Justice de los Santos of Mercury News and others, that shutting down Webb is “a conversation at this point.” Webb and Vitello will have a conversation about it before the latter makes a final decision.
Webb missed three weeks in May with right knee bursitis but has otherwise avoided the injured list in 2026. He had a slow start to the year, posting a 5.06 ERA in eight starts through May 5th, but once he returned on May 29th, Webb had a 2.75 ERA in eight starts leading into the All-Star Break. For his efforts, he was named to the NL All-Star team for the third consecutive season.
Webb was solid in his first six starts out of the break, but the last five have been up and down. He allowed five earned runs in 2 2/3 innings against Boston on August 21st, then held the Reds to two runs in six innings five days later. September 1st was another blowout, this time against the Pirates, but Webb rebounded with six innings of one run ball against the Cardinals on September 7th. Continuing to alternate between good and bad starts, he allowed six earned runs in five innings against the Padres today. That brought his ERA to 4.31, a career-worst mark for Webb in a full season.
The 29-year-old Webb has been one of the league’s most durable pitchers since establishing himself in 2021. Including today, he’s started 185 games from 2021 to the present, ranking third among qualified starters behind Dylan Cease (190) and Kevin Gausman (188). This year’s IL stint for knee bursitis was Webb’s first since 2021, as he avoided the IL entirely from 2022-25.
Webb has thrown 160 2/3 innings so far in 2026. While that total is far from his career high of 216 frames, which he set in 2023, it could be that Webb is simply fatigued and in need of a rest heading into the offseason. His velocity wasn’t noticeably down tonight according to Statcast, and the Giants haven’t indicated that he has a specific injury. More information should be available in the coming days, pending Webb and Vitello’s conversation.
Whether there’s an injury or not, there would be little harm in the Giants shutting down Webb a couple weeks early. The team is officially eliminated from postseason contention, and they’re all but certain to finish the season with more than 90 losses. He could make two more starts if the Giants keep him active. However, it could make more sense to give Webb a head start on the offseason so he comes back at full strength in 2027, rather than let him play out the rest of a lost season. The team just took that approach with first baseman Rafael Devers, placing him on the 60-day IL with a core muscle injury that seems likely to result in surgery.
