The University of Alabama chapter of Turning Point USA, a conservative student-led organization founded nationally by Charlie Kirk, held a candlelight vigil at Denny Chimes on Thursday to honor Kirk on the one-year anniversary of his death. The vigil drew roughly 70 attendees.
Kirk was fatally shot Sept. 10, 2025, while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University.
Tyler Mannelly, president of TPUSA Alabama, said the chapter organized the vigil to recognize Kirk’s influence on the organization and young conservatives.
“We wanted to honor what he did with Turning Point, and how he was a catalyst for the young conservative movement and how he started and encouraged people to have conversations about what they believe in,” Mannelly said.
The vigil included speeches from members of student organizations TPUSA Alabama, Young Americans for Freedom and College Republicans, as well as a prayer and a moment of silence. Speakers reflected on Kirk’s political work, Christian faith and influence on their own involvement.
Organizers also provided crosses for attendees to write messages about what Kirk meant to them, which were placed on the Quad.
Anna Hathorn, vice president of TPUSA Alabama, said organizers intended the vigil to be open to people regardless of their political views.
“We really just want this to be a time of reflection and unity against political violence,” Hathorn said.
Vance Conway, vice president of Young Americans for Freedom, said Kirk’s death reinforced the importance of political dialogue for members of his organization.
“It was a big wake-up call for us to remind us why we do what we do and the importance of free speech and making sure that we can have conversations with people without resorting to violence,” Conway said.
Case Morgan, a freshman majoring in marketing, said his Christian faith motivated him to attend.
“I felt encouraged and inspired to live out my faith, but also to talk to other people openly about what I believe and how I believe,” Morgan said.
Speakers throughout the vigil also called on attendees to continue expressing their beliefs while rejecting political violence and hostility toward those with opposing views.
Dawson Duncan, outreach coordinator for UA College of Republicans, told attendees that Kirk’s death should not become another source of political division.
“Charlie’s death cannot merely become another reason for Americans to hate one another,” Duncan said. “It cannot become another dividing line. It cannot become another wound that we spend the next generation reopening.”
