Left-handed reliever Matt Strahm recently underwent surgery on his right knee, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. It is not clear exactly which type of procedure was performed. Per Murray, Strahm has been trying to latch on with a new team but will now focus on recovering from the surgery and finding a new deal in free agency. He is expected to be fully healthy in 2027.
The Royals acquired Strahm from the Phillies over the offseason with the goal of adding an experienced lefty to their bullpen. Experience aside, Strahm did not deliver good results in his return to Kansas City. He had a 3.86 ERA in his first 17 appearances through the middle of May, but an uptick in home runs, a high 84.3% strand rate, and opponents’ .256 average on balls in play all hinted that he was due for serious regression on that so-so run prevention.
That stretch was interrupted by a trip to the 15-day IL on May 16th for right knee inflammation. As noted by Murray, Strahm’s knee had been bothering him all season and was the reason he pulled out of pitching in the World Baseball Classic. He attempted to pitch through the injury for the Royals, knowing that he would need surgery in the offseason.
Although Strahm only spent the minimum time on the IL, the temporary reprieve did nothing to help his performance on the mound. He was activated at the end of May and appeared in another 24 games, and the results were downright dreadful. In 19 1/3 innings post-injury, Strahm allowed a staggering 22 earned runs on 25 hits, nine of which were home runs. That brutal stretch raised the lefty’s ERA to 7.32 on the season, good for third-worst among relievers with at least 30 innings pitched. Strahm’s -1.3 fWAR ranks dead last among all relievers.
The Royals designated Strahm for assignment on August 4th and eventually released him, rather than try to outright him to Triple-A Omaha, which he would have been able to reject. The lefty is still being paid his $7.5MM guarantee, but he won’t get anything close to that in free agency after struggling so badly this year. Another team could take a low-cost flier on Strahm in 2027, perhaps on a minor league deal, and bet on a rebound campaign as he gets further away from the knee injury. He had a 2.74 ERA and a strong 27.3% strikeout rate for the Phillies just last year, so it’s not entirely implausible that he could turn things around with better health in 2027.
