ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The 30th annual Purple Foot Festival took place at Casa Larga Vineyards on Turk Hill Road on Sunday.
The event featured activities such as grape stomping, grape pie-eating contests, tractor rides through the vineyard, specific activities for kids, and more.
We were told how this all came about. “When we started it, it’s because we would give tours and people would always say, ‘Oh, how do you press the grapes with your feet?’ And I would say, ‘Well, you know, my dad said people growing up in Italy, that people actually did stomp on the grapes.’ He used to say that the women did a better job because their feet were softer,” said Andrea Colaruotolo-O’Neill, president.
She added that this year’s addition focused on the wine, tasting bars, vendors, and chicken races. The squished grapes will be used as fertilizer.
The event was the kickoff to the fall harvest season.
