Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders is still the coolest kid on the red carpet at 75.
The music legend, who rose to fame with the Pretenders thanks to songs like “Back on the Chain Gang,” “Don’t Get Me Wrong,” and “My Baby,” continued her success with the band into the ’90s with the groundbreaking ballad “I’ll Stand by You.” Fast forward to 2026, and Hynde is still thriving, sporting leather and white streaks in her hair. The rock icon hit the premiere of Pretenders during the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival at Roy Thomson Hall this weekend in Toronto, Ontario. What Does Hynde Say About Appearing on Friends?
Hynde pulled a plot twist in 1995 when she guest-starred on Friends as Stephanie Schiffer. The legend performed “Angel of the Morning,” as well as Phoebe Buffay’s iconic tune “Smelly Cat.” When asked about receiving the offer to appear alongside Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe, Hynde told The Guardian she wasn’t even familiar with the beloved comedy series.
“I’d never heard of it, but Warners were putting out an album to accompany this new show and asked me for a song, Angel of the Morning. Then Friends asked me if I could sit in the background in a coffee shop playing it. I got to go to LA for a week and see my friend, but I didn’t know they’d written a whole part for me,” Hynde recalled. “Then Friends was on the cover of every American magazine. I thought: ‘Oh f—, this is gonna be big.’ The cast and everybody were really nice, but I always regretted it because until then, I could take my kids to school and nobody knew who I was. Afterwards, all the kids were saying: “Your mom’s on Friends!”
