All six episodes of Vigil season 3 are now available to watch on BBC iPlayer, with the finale bringing the latest investigation for Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie's Amy and Kirsten to a close.
The first season of Vigil aired in 2021, with the second arriving two years later in 2023. Now that three years have passed, the new season has taken the characters to Svalbard and introduced a new set of characters for a brand-new story.
Of course, there is still plenty of potential for more storylines, given how separately each of the seasons operate – and now, creator Tom Edge has reiterated that fact.
Speaking exclusively with Radio Times ahead of season 3 airing, Edge was asked whether a fourth season could be on the cards, to which he said: "Regrettably, the world remains complicated and finds new ways to evolve towards instability, danger and the rest. So I don't think we would ever find ourselves short of stories."
However, he did add a hint of uncertainty, saying: "I think certainly this time around, we put the show in a place where we feel that this arc across three seasons has been settled."
"I think we will see how it goes," Edge continued. "But one of the pleasures of the show is it doesn't feel like it is a show that has to return on an annual ticking clock basis. So I think we can leave it open, but certainly for this season, it felt like it was the culmination of a bunch of questions that we've asked across three seasons. I was happy to take it to that point."
Beyond Jones and Leslie, the only other cast members to have appeared in all three seasons of Vigil are Gary Lewis as Colin Robertson and Orla Russell as Poppy, Amy's adopted daughter from a previous relationship.
Beyond Vigil, Edge has written for seasons including Lovesick, The Crown and Strike.
