‘High bird migration alert continues as millions fly over Chicago area

A ‘high alert’ for bird migration over the Chicago area remains in effect through Sunday night as tens of thousands of birds continue to fly over the region each night.

The alert comes as millions of birds migrated over Illinois each night for the past several days. In all, more than 825 million birds were expected to move across the U.S. during the migration, with cool weather and dry conditions expected to encourage those birds to make their southward travels during overnight hours.

Peak migration traffic this week took place in the very early hours Tuesday morning when, around 2:20 a.m., more than 68 million birds were recorded flying over Illinois, according to BirdCast, a project spearheaded by Cornell and other organizations.

The alert is in place through Monday morning, though BirdCast estimates significantly fewer birds are expected to migrate over the area during the weekend than passed through earlier this week, though most of the Chicago area should still see numbers in the tens of thousands.

Officials are warning residents to take precautions to keep the countless species of birds migrating to their winter homes safe on their journey across Chicago and the Great Lakes — one of the busiest flyways in North America southbound birds.

“Bright lights attract and disorient nocturnally migrating birds, potentially causing fatal collisions with buildings or exposure to additional day time hazards,” Chicago Animal Care and Control said in a social media post on Wednesday.

What can people do to protect the birds?

There are several steps locals can take to ensure birds migrating overnight can pass through the area safely.

Turn off or to dim unnecessary exterior lights between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Aim exterior lights downward and ensure they’re well-shielded Close blinds or curtains to reduce light spill Avoid lighting lobbies, fountains, or plants that attract birds Bring cats inside during overnight hours
