A man armed with an axe was arrested after attacking two drivers along Interstate 80 in northwest Indiana following a police pursuit on Friday, authorities said.
Ivan Savych, 29, from New Jersey, was arrested for resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony and two counts of criminal mischief, both Class A misdemeanors. State police said on Friday afternoon, troopers were called to the 1.9-mile marker along the interstate in Hammond after a man attacked a semi-tractor with an axe.
The driver told police a black 2011 Volkswagen had been driving erratically, brake-checking and cutting off other semis before forcing her to come to a complete stop. He then exited the Volkswagen barefoot, appeared irate and yelled incoherently.
The victim said the man then reversed his vehicle, nearly hit her truck, then exited again, holding a long-handled axe with a leather blade cover. The man struck her grille, radiator and driver-side headlight before approaching her driver-side door. However, at that point, her dog started barking loudly, which apparently scared him away.
Less than 20 minutes after the initial call, troopers responded to a second incident near the 5.4-mile marker by the Cline Avenue overpass. The caller said he tried to avoid the other driver, but the man swerved in front of him, came to a complete stop and hit his semi with an axe. He then fled the scene.
A trooper later spotted the vehicle along eastbound I-80 and activated her lights and sirens, at which point the driver fled. The Volkswagen accelerated to 80 miles per hour before deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department boxed the vehicle in and brought it to a stop.
The driver, who troopers said did not speak English and was uncooperative, was taken into custody.
