Austin Simmons, Robert Woodyard catapult Mizzou to 5th straight Border War win

The Missouri Tigers have won the Border War.

Again.

Mizzou is now 2-0 on the season after winning its 5th straight over Kansas, 38-21. After a slow start and a tied score heading into halftime, the Tigers exploded out of the gate into the second half and never looked back.

The Player of the Game may very well have been Auburn LB transfer Robert Woodyard, whose back-to-back forced turnovers gave Austin Simmons and the Tigers offense excellent field position and set up back-to-back touchdown drives. Woodyard finished Friday night’s contest with 6 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery and 1 interception.

On the other side of the ball, Simmons had an exceptional game for the Tigers. He completed 19 of his 29 passing attempts for 292 yards and 3 touchdowns and showed off his arm strength a few times, including a tight slant to Donovan Olugbode to complete the sequence Woodyard started.

Olugbode finished as Missouri’s leading receiver on the evening, totaling 6 receptions for 121 yards and the above touchdown. Ole Miss transfer Cayden Lee finished 1 yard shy of those numbers, collecting 6 receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown.

Jamal Roberts was an important piece to the puzzle Friday night, too. The senior running back led all rushers with 28 carries for 125 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown rush in the 2nd quarter.

The Jayhawks have not won the Border War since 2008. Next up for Missouri, the Tigers travel home for a Week 3 battle against the Troy Trojans.
