PITTSFORD, N.Y. — St. John Fisher University held its first ever stair climb today to honor the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic attended the event, which was organized by students. Sophomores Connor Brown, Cam Cook, and Tyler Hildreth partnered with the university to make it happen. Brown organizing a smaller walk in his dorm hall last year for the anniversary.
How it went
The day of remembrance at Fisher started with a ceremony where local first responders shared where they were when the attacks happened. Then came a moment of silence.
Brown wasn’t even born when it happened.
“It’s one of those things, especially with my age group, trying to keep the memory alive as long as we can so we do not ever forget,” Brown said.
Brown is a volunteer firefighter in Watertown. He climbed in full gear, which weighs about 80 pounds.
“There was this motivation to keep the memory alive the best we can. This year we wanted to make it bigger and better,” Brown said.
Words from the president
Dr. Gerard Rooney, president of St. John Fisher University, said Brown approached him about expanding the event.
“Connor was a first year student and rallied a group of his hall mates to do a stair climb in his residence hall. That was something he was familiar with because of high school years. So soon after that I met him and he was quick to tell me about the stair climb and his vision for a campus event,” Rooney said.
Will the stair climb stick around?
Rooney said this will become a Fisher tradition moving forward. State troopers, Monroe County sheriff’s deputies and the Brighton Fire Department were all there, with troopers also taking part in the climb.
Participants climbed the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs in Kearney Hall, making 13 trips up and down from the first to the fourth floor. The climb honored the first responders and all those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
