ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A new memorial was dedicated in Highland Park to honor the victims, heroes and survivors of the 9/11 attacks.
The memorial stands as a tribute to the men and women who ran straight into danger to help others. It’s intended to serve as a reminder of their sacrifice.
“25 years ago today, our country changed forever and for those of us who lived through September 11th, it really is hard to believe it’s been 25 years,” Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said.
For many, it’s a memory. For others, it’s history.
“For our kids and the generations that come after them, it’s history and that means it’s now our responsibility to tell the story,” Bello said.
The hope is that this memorial will help do that.
“This is honor, this is respect, this is remembrance and this is exactly what we should be doing as Americans,” Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter said.
The memorial honors the victims, heroes and survivors of the attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and aboard Flight 93. It also honors the firefighters, EMTs and police officers who responded to them.
“It’s not how these men and women died that made them heroes, it’s how they lived. The men and women who ran towards those towers, the men and women that went months after and still absorbed that poison and are suffering today. The men and women that volunteered to go overseas and take the fight to the enemy,” Baxter said.
There is also a War on Terror monument at Highland Park. It honors all of the local service members who died in the war that followed what happened on this day, 25 years ago.
