NEW YORK — News10NBC Investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke takes us through the tragic timeline of how the deadliest terror attack in American history unfolded on Sept. 11, 2001.
First plane hits North Tower
It was 8:46 a.m. when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. All 76 passengers, 11 crew members and five hijackers who boarded in Boston were killed instantly.
Employees above the 91st floor in the tower were trapped.
Second plane hits South Tower
Seventeen minutes later at 9:03 a.m., a second plane from Boston, United Flight 175, crashed into the South Tower. All 51 passengers, nine crew members and five hijackers were killed.
Hundreds of first responders from across New York City rushed to the scene and up into both towers to try and help those who were trapped and injured.
Plane crashes into Pentagon
At 9:37 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77, which took off from Dulles, crashed into the Pentagon. All passengers were killed instantly and so were 125 civilian and military personnel in the building.
United Flight 93 hijacked
At 9:45 a.m., the decision was made to ground all flights across the United States. United Flight 93 out of Newark did not heed that order.
It had been hijacked, but many of the passengers on the plane had learned what was happening across the country. And at 9:57 a.m., they decided to storm the cockpit.
While that was happening, at 9:59 a.m., the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed.
Just three minutes later at 10:02 a.m., Flight 93 plowed into an empty field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania — the passengers ensuring the hijackers did not make it to the nation’s Capitol. Everyone on board was killed instantly.
Twenty-six minutes later at 10:28 a.m., the North Tower collapsed. The country was changed forever.
Rochester remembers
On Friday, People across the Rochester gathered at ceremonies to remember the lives lost during the terror attacks 25 years ago.
