Cava, a popular fast-casual Mediterranean chain restaurant, is set to replace the vacant storefront on the Strip left by Whataburger.
The restaurant will be located at 1130 University Blvd. in a central location on the Strip.
The Board of Trustees for the University of Alabama System met on Thursday and Friday, with Mike Rogers, the system’s assistant chancellor for construction management, presenting the item to the board’s Physical Properties Committee.
At the Thursday meeting, Rogers said that Cava would operate under a five-year initial term with three five-year renewal options based on “mutual agreement of the parties.”
Rogers said that the University would provide the restaurant with a renovation allowance not to exceed $243,200.
The board voted to approve the commercial lease agreement with Cava Friday.
Cava currently has locations in Hoover, Huntsville, Montgomery and Mobile, with multiple locations in Birmingham and Madison.
Whataburger closed Dec. 15, 2025, after being open since August 2023. The storefront has remained vacant since the closure.
