URochester grad fought against hijackers of Flight 93; Other local colleges remember alumni killed on 9/11

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — People across the Rochester area are gathering on Friday to remember the lives lost during the Sept. 11 terror attacks 25 years ago. That includes the 44 people who died after United Airlines Flight 92 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The hijackers had intended to crash the plane into a Washington, D.C. government building, but the passengers and crew fought back, forcing the plane to crash into a field. Two of the passengers were University of Rochester alumni.

Jeremy Glick, a New Jersey native who graduated from URochester in 1993, is believed to be one of the passengers who fought against the hijackers. He was on Flight 93 because his original flight had been canceled the day before, according to the university’s website.

After his death, Glick earned the Arthur Ashe Courage Award and the Medal for Heroism, among the highest civilian honors, for his bravery. While at the university, Glick was president of the Rochester chapter of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, and a plaque hangs in his honor today.

Jean Hoadley Peterson, a 1969 URochester graduate, was aboard the flight with her husband. The New Jersey native was heading to an annual family reunion at Yosemite National Park.

Peterson, who studied nursing at the university, went on to work as an emergency medical technician, lead Bible studies, and traveled overseas for mission work. She’s also remembered as someone who helped people facing drug and alcohol addiction and pregnant women in crisis.

Four other URochester alumni were killed in the attacks. Zhe (Zack) Zeng was a medic who responded to the World Trade Center when the first tower collapsed. Jeffrey Smith, Aram Iskenderian, and Brendan Dolan were all working at the World Trade Center when the planes hit.

In addition, two Rochester Institute of Technology alumni were killed in the attacks. Philip Rosenzweig, a 1997 graduate, was among the passengers who died when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. Deborah Medwig, a 1978 graduate, was a passenger on United Airlines flight 175, the second hijacked plane to hit the World Trade Center.

SUNY Brockport lost the lives of four alumni in the 9/11 attacks: Shannon Adams, class of 1998; Peter Milano, class of 1983; Allen Upton, class of 1979; Patrick Waters, class of 1978.
