Rachel Uchitel is remembering her fiancé, James Andrew “Andy” O’Grady, 25 years after he was killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks.
View this post on InstagramUchitel, who was working at Bloomberg TV in New York on Sept. 11, 2001, shared an emotional tribute to O’Grady on Friday morning, recalling the moment she watched the World Trade Center’s South Tower collapse while knowing he was inside.
In beginning of the short video tribute posted to Instagram, Uchitel is talking to a reporter while holding a missing poster for O’Grady.
“I’m just going from place to place. This is my fiance. I ‘ve planned my whole future out with this person. If I don’t find him, I have to start all over again,” she says through tears. “It’s taken me my entire life to find him, and I don’t know what I will do without him. Please, please, help me find him.”
O’Grady, 32, was a managing director at Sandler O’Neill & Partners and worked on the 104th floor of the South Tower, also known as Two World Trade Center. The building was struck by United Airlines Flight 175 at 9:03 a.m. and collapsed at 9:59 a.m. O’Grady is among the nearly 3,000 people who were killed in the attacks.
“I remember speaking to him, and what he was saying on the phone,” Uchitel wrote in the caption. “I remember watching his building fall and not being able to catch my breath. I remember the whole news room floor got silent. They had all just watched me watch Andy die. And it was all too unreal.”
Uchitel and O’Grady had gotten engaged on Aug. 5, 2001, just weeks before the attacks, and were planning their wedding.
In her post, Uchitel described the agonizing days that followed as she held out hope that O’Grady had survived. She recalled hearing that he might be at Bellevue Hospital and rushing there to search for him.
“I wanted to go to Ground Zero and pick up the rubble myself until I found him,” she wrote. “The despair of not knowing was beyond words.”
A photograph of Uchitel searching for O’Grady became one of the most recognizable images of the aftermath of 9/11, appearing in newspapers around the world.
Uchitel said the outpouring of support from strangers after the photograph was published remains meaningful to her.
“Everyone wanted to know about Andy, and for that, I am so thankful,” she wrote. “It was the honor of my life to have been loved by James Andrew O’Grady. I am thankful that because of the photo that ran on the cover of almost every paper in the world of me searching for him, more people know his name.”
