Health officials in Chicago are urging residents who traveled through Union Station late last month to monitor for symptoms of measles.
According to the Chicago Department of Public Health, a confirmed measles exposure occurred at Union Station after 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, with a patient testing positive for the virus after spending multiple hours within the station.
Travelers who used Union Station on August 28 are also being urged to monitor themselves for symptoms of the virus, according to health officials.
That symptom monitoring should continue through September 18, as symptoms can take up to three weeks to manifest according to the Chicago Department of Public Health.
Residents who are immune to measles, whether through previous infection or the MMR vaccine, should monitor for symptoms for up to 21 days following an exposure, according to federal and state health guidance.
Individuals who are not immune to the disease are urged to stay home and to quarantine for up to 21 days after exposure to help protect the health of others.
Measles is an extremely contagious illness and spreads through the air when an infected individual coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain in the air for several hours after an infected individual leaves a room, according to the CDPH.
Symptoms typically manifest within a period of 7-to-21 days after exposure to the virus, according to the CDC.
Early symptoms of the virus include a high fever, a cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. In later stages of the illness, a rash typically develops on a patient’s head and eventually spreads, and patients are at risk of spreading the virus for up to four days before, and four days after, developing that rash.
