Mia Farrow Shares Powerful Photos From Her Time Volunteering at Ground Zero With Her Sons After 9/11

Mia Farrow may be a staple of Hollywood, but the beloved actress just shared a powerful story about working at Ground Zero in New York City after 9/11.

Farrow, 81, rose to stardom on Peyton Place before scoring the legendary role of Rosemary Woodhouse in Roman Polanski‘s Rosemary’s Baby. Also known for her marriage to Frank Sinatra at the time, the duo went on to split during the filming of the iconic horror film. She found other great roles, like The Great Gatsby and Hannah and Her Sisters. Also known for her lengthy relationship with director Woody Allen and her many children, including investigative journalist Ronan Farrow, Mia just shared a particularly poignant story ahead of the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

In a series of photos taken at Ground Zero just days after two planes hit the World Trade Center, Farrow shares her story of volunteering to help first responders as they faced the impossible situation.

“After 9/11:- i think it was day 3, after the bridge reopened, i drove to the Javits Center downtown NYC and asked if there was anything i could do to help. They assigned me to Ground Zero Food Services, gave me a pass for my wallet and put a sticker on my old red Volvo, i agreed to cook and to drive supplies when asked for, to the pit where the firemen were searching. The steel workers with massive machines were now also at work. Searching,” said Farrow.

She went on to recall the harrowing scene.

“Below Canal St was another world. A thick ‘dust’ hung over the rubble. Firemen were searching. Our kitchen was a tent & mobile truck belonging to a good citizen from Maine. It was stationed near the pit with some outside tables,” she said. “Firemen & other workers came throughout the day. They were warmly greeted and given a delicious hot meal. We cooked and cooked, day after day. I brought lunches to nearby fire stations. It was an honor. After a month or so, i brought my two youngest sons, Ronan and Isaiah. I wanted them to understand that in a terrible time, we do our best to find some way, however small, to help.”

In the second slide, you can see a young Ronan Farrow volunteering alongside his brother, Isaiah.
