ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe County Executive Adam Bello has signed a law granting property tax relief to the spouses of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.
This comes after the Monroe County Legislature unanimously approved the law. New York State passed a law earlier this year allowing local governments to provide a property tax exemption of up to 50% for the spouses of officers who lost their lives on the job. With the signature, Monroe County has opted into a state program and will provide the highest-permitted 50% tax exemption.
The law comes four years after Rochester Police Officer Tony Mazurkiewicz was killed in the line of duty, during an ambush on Bauman Street. The ambush on July 21, 2022 also wounded his partner, Officer Sino Seng. The law also comes 12 years after RPD Officer Daryl Pierson was killed in the line of duty, while chasing a suspect near Hudson Avenue.
What other state benefits do families receive?
When an officer is killed in the line of duty in New York State, their family is eligible for benefits equal to two-thirds of the officer’s average weekly pay. Lawmakers say this law is designed to provide additional financial help for families in their time of mourning.
The county held a public hearing on the legislation in August to get feedback from the community.
