Ryan Murphy's stylish adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's novel The Shards has spent the summer of 2026 dominating conversation, mixing 1980s Los Angeles glamour with a creepy serial-killer thriller.

Reporting around the launch indicated that Murphy and his producers built the adaptation with a longer arc in mind, deliberately expanding Ellis's source material so the story could sustain multiple seasons.

What have the cast and creators of The Shards said?
The season 1 finale made significant changes from the novel's ending, and executive producer Brad Simpson has publicly defended those choices while teasing where a continuation could go.
He told Us Magazine: "It feels like book fans may be looking at it and thinking, 'Oh, my God, they're going to rush the end of the book'. Which we definitely didn't do.
"We haven't finished the story, so [season 2] is the hope. It could go further if we wanted it to. But we haven't made it to the end of the book yet, so we'll see.
"[The novel] is a first-person narrator and he's telling everything from his point of view. Part of the fun of the show was we got to go into other people’s point of view," added Simpson, hinting at how future chapters could pad out the source material.
With the story deliberately reshaped to leave room for more, the building blocks for a second season are in place should FX give the green light.
Who could be in a The Shards season 2 cast?
No cast has been confirmed for a potential second season, but the central ensemble from season 1 would be the natural starting point for any continuation.
