A dark comedy spy thriller from Searchlight Pictures, Wild Horse Nine is set against the backdrop of the 1973 Chilean coup d’état and centers on two seasoned CIA operatives, Chris and Lee, played by John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, respectively, who are dispatched from Santiago to Easter Island before their operations escalate again. Trust is tested, bonds are deepened, and legacies are written.

Next Best Picture said it is “quite tempting to call Wild Horse Nine McDonagh’s best film,” while Coming Soon is carrying a first-reactions piece explicitly titled, “Wild Horse Nine First Reactions Say Banshees of Inisherin Director Has Made His Best Movie Yet.”
AwardsWatch also gave the film an A, calling it a comedic investigation with Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, and it currently has a 91% combined critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with several more festival screenings before it releases to the public.
Of course, there are those publications that aren’t as jazzed. The Guardian called it “not a McDonagh classic,” while IndieWire gave it a lukewarm B-, calling it “prickly but unconvincing.” Still, getting a 13-minute standing ovation at Venice, with Malkovich visibly emotional and already generating Oscar buzz, is a step in the right direction.
Next up are additional festival screenings, including the Toronto International Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival, before Wild Horse Nine hits theaters Nov. 6.
