The UA Artificial Intelligence Club had its first official meeting of the year on Tuesday, hosting University President Peter J. Mohler as the guest speaker.
Mohler emphasized the importance of acting now and putting AI infrastructure in place for innovation to take place.
“There is a very moment of time, and it’s going to be a very short moment in time, where you all are going to be looked at as leaders of this new revolution of AI,” Mohler said. “This is not a world that just lives in engineering anymore. This is something that’s going to be across every one of our disciplines.”
This mindset led President Mohler to create initiatives to build infrastructure for AI. These include a new school for data science, a free course for students called AI Experience and a potential innovation space on the Strip.
“We need to make sure we’re all aligned on some of these things, so we can begin to innovate, develop and create future careers,” Mohler said. “I hope this is going to be a place to have big chunks of very strong metadata to allow you the bandwidth at zero cost to be able to bring disciplines together.”
Several students chimed in, and Mohler asked them about the innovation hub with opportunities for mentorship.
Some students said they wanted “a lot of open spaces but segmented to allow for a lot of collaboration,” “a lot of plugs and bright lights” and “access to better models of AI.”
The space would host different entrepreneurs, and they discussed limited access so that the space is filled with people who are actively working on a project that will further the community.
The AI Club was created with these same ideas of innovation and collaboration in mind.
Zachary Groves, a junior majoring in computer engineering and UA AI Club president, said he gained experience with AI at his internship at Information Services Group.
“I was an AI engineering intern on a team with four other interns. We built automated workflows and solutions to support the company throughout the summer,” Groves said. “The month before, there was an employee who, through one prompt, managed to spend $30,000 on AI credits. So, what I did was create a knowledge document that broke down, in the simplest manner, how to use ChatGPT. It was a very small project, but it had a very big impact.”
Jackie Clayton, a junior majoring in computer science and secretary of the club, said he agreed with Groves’ method of teaching others about AI.
“I felt like it is something that hasn’t been talked about enough in Alabama,” Clayton said. “We could do so much better in terms of awareness and education.”
Elijah Purcell, a freshman majoring in psychology and data science, emphasized the importance of AI in his work at a small-town business.
“I run a small software development business and use AI in my stuff,” Purcell said. “We work with small businesses in the area, local people and mom-and-pop shops that don’t have access to the technologies that a lot of bigger corporations use.”
However, Purcell joined the club to expand his AI knowledge and use it beyond his work.
“I hope we can network and work with other ambitious people to learn about AI and how to apply AI in our different fields,” Purcell said. “I’ve used AI a lot for myself or for business, but I’ve never gotten to use it for academics or research, so I think it’d be great to join up with people my age and experience that together.”
Overall, the meeting drew strong student attendance and participation.
“We had a great turnout today,” Clayton said. “We’re super excited to see that we got around 40 people. We’re finally on the TVs across campus, and that was huge for us. It’s a matter of time and of getting the word out and hoping that students want to be, at least, up to date about AI.”
The club will meet every other Tuesday at 5 p.m., hosting various speakers starting Sept. 22 in Lloyd Hall Auditorium 38.
