The Red Sox gave up a strong package of talent in order to bring catcher Adley Rutschman to Boston. Fellow catcher Carlos Narváez went to Baltimore along with prospects Anthony Eyanson, Enddy Azocar, Kyson Witherspoon and Harold Rivas, the latter as the player to be named later. The Sox also acquired Jake Rogers and cash but the deal was really about Rutschman. Rogers was designated for assignment as soon as Rutschman was ready to come off the injured list.
For that pile of talent, the Sox only really got a bit more than a year of Rutschman’s services. He is slated for free agency after 2027, so Boston can only count on him helping the team for the rest of this season and one full campaign.
That situation is somewhat analogous to their acquisition of Garrett Crochet. In December of 2024, the Red Sox acquired Crochet, sending prospects Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth and Wikelman González to Chicago. In exchange for those four prospects, the Sox only secured two years of Crochet, as he was slated for free agency after 2026.
But the Sox clearly liked Crochet, hence the hefty prospect package they gave up. Once they got him, they seemed determined to keep him. Rumors of extension talks popped up shortly after the trade and the two sides got something done a few months later. Shortly after Opening Day 2025, Crochet and the Sox agreed to a six-year, $170MM pact that would cover the 2026 to 2031 seasons.
That deal shattered previous precedent. At the time, the largest guarantee given to a pitcher with between four and five years of service time was the $120.5MM Jacob deGrom got from the Mets in 2019. Second on the list was Justin Verlander’s $80MM deal with the Tigers in 2010. Crochet soared past deGrom and more than doubled Verlander.
It would appear that the Sox, having already paid a notable price to get Crochet, didn’t want him to then slip away after just a couple of seasons. Perhaps the same logic would apply to Rutschman. After giving up a sizeable amount of talent to get Rutschman, would they let him simply walk a year from now?
