For the second time this year, an NFL star is buying a minority stake in the Cleveland Guardians. Not four months after the Guardians announced that Cleveland native and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had purchased a stake in the club, the Guards have issued a statement announcing that Ohio native and Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward has purchased his own minority share:
“The Cleveland Guardians today announced career Ohioan football star and five-time Pro Bowler Denzel Ward has joined the Guardians as an investor.
Ward, who has spent his entire football career in Ohio, progressing from Nordonia High School in Macedonia, to Ohio State, to the first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2018, recently signed a two-year extension with the Browns, keeping him in Cleveland through the 2029 season. The number four overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft has been named to five Pro Bowls, most recently in 2025, and has established himself as a premier cover cornerback in the NFL with 104 career passes defended and 18 interceptions.”
It’s not clear how large a stake Ward purchased, though he should have ample resources at his disposal. The 29-year-old already has more than $103MM in career earnings. He’s entering the fourth season of a five-year contract that came with $71.25MM in guarantees and a maximum value of $100.5MM. The two-year extension he recently inked tacked another two years and $52.3MM in guaranteed money onto his future income outlook, and he can earn another $9.9MM under the terms of that deal — a max value of $62.2MM. (Connor Byrne of MLBTR and MLBTR’s sister site, Pro Football Rumors, broke down Ward’s contract extension at the time of signing in late July.)
Both of those extensions for “The Warden” were record-breaking deals for his position at the time they were signed — the first in both guaranteed money and annual salary, the latter only in AAV (due to its shorter-term nature). Ward’s latest AAV record was short-lived, as it’s since been topped by Seahawks star Devon Witherspoon and Patriots star Christian Gonzalez. By the time his current contract expires, his career earnings will be around $200MM. That’s just in salary/signing bonuses and does not include revenue he’s secured through endorsement deals with Nike and other brands.
Ward joins the Guardians’ ownership group at a time of transition. The Dolan family has owned the franchise for more than 25 years. However, the initial purchase was made under Larry Dolan, who passed away in Feb. 2025 at 94 years of age. His son, Paul Dolan, has been the chairman and MLB-approved control person for the franchise since 2013.
Paul Dolan agreed to sell a minority stake to David Blitzer — majority owner of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils — back in 2022. Blitzer originally purchased a reported 25-30% share of the club, and the agreement included language that allowed him to increase his stake in the team annually. Blitzer will be able to purchase a majority stake of the Guardians ahead of the 2028 season. Notably, The Athletic’s Zack Meisel reports that it was Blitzer who spearheaded the efforts to bring Kelce and Ward on board as minority owners.
