Will the SEC really kick LSU out of the conference? It’s unlikely, said ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Wednesday.
As reported on Tuesday, the SEC is set to hold a special meeting on Thursday to discuss LSU’s future in the league following the program’s intention to add former professional players to its roster. Notably, LSU reached the 105-player cap for the season on Wednesday night — ending the possibility of former pros such as Zxavian Harris and Dae-Quan Wright suiting up for the Tigers.
While speaking with ESPN’s Mike Greenberg on Get Up Saturday morning, Thamel had the following to say:
“Look Greeny, the expectation is they are not going to throw LSU from the league,” Thamel said. “But the fact that Greg Sanket testified for 3 hours in a state-court hearing, now that was a player eligibility hearing that didn’t directly involve LSU, but 2 of the players were certainly trying to go there. So now, the possibility is at the very least on the table and it’s bananas, quite frankly.”

On Wednesday, the SEC amended its lawsuit against LSU, submitting Lane Kiffin‘s comment “Imagine if we had pro players” as evidence against the university. Kiffin made the comment just before heading to the locker room after a dominant first half against Clemson.
As Thamel mentioned above, the SEC is attempting to reaffirm its rights to enforce its own rules at a hearing in Alabama on Wednesday. As for Thursday’s meeting, we’ll just have to wait and see.
