GENESEO, N.Y. (WHEC) — SUNY Geneseo women’s tennis is off to a perfect start this season, winning their first three matches in 7-0 sweeps. They had a closer fourth match, but still improved to 4-0 on the year.
Head coach Alan Heverly said the team’s dominance comes as no surprise given their talent level.
“It’s really unbelievable in a lot of ways, except for the fact that the team’s so good,” Heverly said. “It’s really one of the better teams in the league, obviously, we’ve been for years.”
This year’s squad has learned how to capitalize on early momentum. Senior Natalie Pipes said maintaining intensity is crucial in tennis.
“With tennis momentum’s one of the biggest things you can have,” Pipes said. “If you start losing the intensity a little bit, it’s hard to get that back. So to come out swinging, it’s important.”
Senior Samantha Rava said the team is focused on keeping their energy high throughout the season.
“We really just want to be able to cause a racket this season,” Rava said. “And just really get out there, nose on the grindstone and keep the energy up.”
The Knights are tired of finishing second in the Empire 8 Conference. Rava said she and her fellow seniors are determined to win the championship after coming up short in previous years.
“We want the win for the Empire 8,” Rava said. “We just want to go for the entire thing. That’s our goal. We’ve both been seniors, we’ve come in second every single year. We’re sick of it. We just want to win.”
Pipes said the team’s focus and passion make her believe they can finally capture the title.
“Feeling like if we can keep it up, I think we can actually do this this year,” Pipes said. “I think we’ll be able to get the win. It’s so great to see everyone so focused and passionate and feel like they want this.”
Heverly has been chasing a championship throughout his coaching career. He finished second at both Lehigh and Moravian during his time at those programs.
“When I coached at Lehigh, we finished second for the years I was there,” Heverly said. “I coached at Moravian, we finished second the years I was there. It’d be nice to win one.”
Hartwick has been the Knights’ biggest obstacle the last two seasons. But Heverly said this year’s team has the determination to overcome that challenge.
“I think this year, the desire to do the whole thing,” Heverly said. “To really come together and do the whole thing. That seems to finally have settled down, like this is it, we’re going to do it now.”
