Andrew Garfield reveals hopes that new film The Uprising scares billionaires s**tless

Andrew Garfield has revealed that he hopes his new film The Uprising – which will be released in UK cinemas next month – will strike fear into the hearts of billionaires.

The Paul Greengrass directed historical action film dramatises the events of the 1381 Peasants' Revolt, and star Garfield reckons it has plenty of modern relevance.

Speaking during a panel discussion at a recent screening ahead of the film's release, he explained that he hoped that audiences would find the film "galvanising" and experience an "awakening" while watching.

"[I hope] that we all feel like our own struggles are being reflected in the struggles of these characters from a distant time and place, and that it could be directive," he said.

"And I hope that if any billionaires watch it, they’re scared s**tless."

Later in the panel, Garfield also said that billionaires "might be the most soul sick" people in the world and that they "might need the healing the most in a way."

Of course, Garfield himself will be a playing a prominent billionaire – OpenAI CEO Sam Altman – in Luca Guadagnino's upcoming film Artificial, which was recently confirmed to play at next month's London Film Festival.

Meanwhile, in The Uprising he plays a character named only as Ploughman, who has apparently been loosely inspired by Robin Hood – although there have been conflicting reports as to whether the iconic folk hero was actually the basis for the film.

While marketing materials in the US made direct reference to the character, UK distributor Entertainment Film issued a statement saying "The Uprising is a historical epic about the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, not Robin Hood."

It continued: "Marketing materials posted by other countries that may appear in the UK online and on social media referencing Robin Hood are not issued or approved by us."

The Uprising will be released in UK cinemas on Friday 9 October 2026.
