Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber announced on Monday that the Khedival Cairo development project will comprise four main phases.
He explained that the first phase includes Tahrir Square, the second phase extends from Talaat Harb Square to Mostafa Kamel Square, the third phase encompasses the section of Opera Square extending to Talaat Harb Square, and the fourth phase covers Qasr El-Nil Street between Mostafa Kamel and Opera Squares.
Saber indicated that the project also includes the development of the section of 26th of July Street up to Opera Square, along with the completion of the development work on Talaat Harb Street up to 26th of July Street.
The Presidential Advisor for Local Development, Chairman of the National Committee for the Protection and Development of Historic Cairo, Khaled Fouda, alongside the Cairo Governor, chaired a meeting to follow up on developments in the implementation of the project.
The Governor of Cairo confirmed that the implementation of the project is being carried out in full coordination with the National Organization for Urban Harmony.
Saber called to develop a clear time plan to develop downtown real estate and maximize the use of existing assets, while implementing activities keeping with Cairo’s historical heritage, in cooperation with the concerned authorities, civil society institutions, and residents of the region.
Coordination among all parties involved in the project is essential to achieve the best results according to the established timelines, he stressed.
Saber also called to organize regular cultural and artistic events to promote social and cultural activity and integrate heritage elements into the urban landscape, thus contributing to the revitalization of the downtown area.
He further noted the necessity of developing a clear model and a comprehensive plan for each street or area within the development scope.
This plan should include a study of traffic flow, traffic signals, lampposts, sidewalks, and markets, along with an operational plan that ensures all parties adhere to the agreed-upon schedules.
Cooperation with civil society, stakeholders, and property owners will play a vital role to ensure the sustainability of development and economic activities in the area, he said, while continuing field campaigns to regulate streets and remove encroachments.
The Presidential Advisor for Local Development, Khaled Fouda, urged full adherence to the established timelines for completing all development work.
He explained that the project includes the restoration of heritage facades, street repairs, improved lighting and infrastructure, and the revitalization of historical buildings.
Fouda affirmed that the development work aims to restore Khedival Cairo to its former status as a prominent cultural, tourist, and historical district.
