Will Top Spot Secure a Kind Run to the Final Again?
When the UEFA Champions League was reformatted a few years ago, some felt it developed a catch-22 situation.
While there was certainly a perception it teed up more games between top teams, the fact there were a greater number of matches in general meant some argued jeopardy was lacking.
So, how important, truly, are the biggest games?
Well, it obviously depends on your ambitions for starters, but Arsenal serve as a good example of how a high finish can benefit you.
After winning the league phase last season, the Gunners ended up with a highly favourable draw. They saw off Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16, Sporting CP in the quarter-finals and then Atlético Madrid in the semis.
By contrast, second-placed Bayern Munich tussled with Atalanta, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, losing to the latter in the semi-finals.
Arsenal won all their league-phase games, meaning they defeated their toughest opponents as well as the easier ones. They beat Atlético 4-0, Bayern and Inter 3-1 (the latter away from home).
It’s still possible that Arsenal would’ve got to the final with a tougher knockout route, of course. But they gave themselves every advantage by winning the league phase, which required them to do well in their heavyweight clashes.
Who Stands to Benefit From Fixture Schedule?
If you were to look back with a cursory glance over last season’s final league-phase table, among the most surprising takeaways would be that Tottenham finished as high as fourth.
They ended up being one of the four English sides to be eliminated at the last-16 stage, but considering their domestic form, it was a surprise to most that they made it so far.
Spurs lost just once in the league phase, finished ahead of Real Madrid, Inter, PSG, Manchester City, Barcelona and others, and their seven goals conceded was the joint-second fewest after Arsenal (4).
But if you go back even further to when last season’s draw was made, the Opta Power Rankings determined Spurs to have the fourth-easiest fixture schedule; their opponents had an average Opta Power Rating of 89.1.

So, who this season could benefit in a similar manner to Spurs and enjoy a surprise top-eight finish thanks to a kind fixture list?
Stuttgart (88.5) have the easiest schedule, according to the Opta Power Rankings, followed by Inter. A top-eight finish would be an achievement for the Germans, certainly; less so for Inter, but as noted earlier, a kind fixture list can set you up to win the league phase and earn a less intimidating route through the knockouts. That won’t be lost on an Inter side who’ll have ambitions of going deep.
Liverpool (89.3) will presumably fancy their chances even if there is still a sense of flux surrounding the club given their summer of upheaval. Real Madrid (89.9) will also be backing themselves; a trip to Arsenal on MD6 won’t be easy, but otherwise an away game against Roma will be their biggest test on the road.
Will PSG Be Slow Burners Yet Again?
Paris Saint-Germain will be aiming to achieve a feat only three clubs (Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Ajax) have managed before across the European Cup/Champions League: winning the title in at least three successive seasons.
Of course, Madrid are the only club to have done so in the Champions League era, so it’s not an achievement to be taken lightly. PSG can’t be accused of lacking ambition, though.
There’s a long road between now and the end of the season, however, and it’s fair to say their start to the campaign hasn’t exactly been ideal.
Domestically, Luis Enrique’s men haven’t won any of their first four games. They lost the Trophée des Champions to Lens and have amassed just two points from three Ligue 1 outings, drawing 2-2 with Rennes and Lille prior to Friday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Monaco.
Their only win in five matches across all competitions this term was their arguably fortunate 2-1 success in the UEFA Super Cup over an Aston Villa side who’ve taken a single point from their first three Premier League games in 2026-27.
PSG should comfortably defeat Slovan Bratislava at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, but MDs 2 and 3 see them face Manchester City and Barcelona. Poor results in those games are hardly beyond the realm of possibility, and that would leave them playing catch-up.
But would it matter?
PSG are, after all, the perfect counterpoint to those who say finishing top (or high up) in the league phase is crucial (well, you know, it’s pretty important to finish in the top 24).
In 2024-25, they came 15th; in 2025-26, they finished 11th – the Parisians went on to lift the trophy in both campaigns.
Can José Mourinho Make the Most of His Surprise Return to Relevance?
The Champions League was the one major honour José Mourinho didn’t win during his first spell at Real Madrid.
He’s back at the Bernabéu this season, hoping to inject a winning mentality and to get the egos under control following a disappointing campaign under Xabi Alonso and then Álvaro Arbeloa in 2025-26.
But it’s fair to say Madrid’s choice of Mourinho surprised plenty in the football world.
Having gone from Tottenham to Roma to Fenerbahce to Benfica, most probably assumed Mourinho’s time at the top of the game was over, his relevance spent.
But Real Madrid is a peculiar beast, a club like no other.
Having seen the success of bona fide legends such as Zinedine Zidane and Carlo Ancelotti at the club, president Florentino Pérez seemingly decided that hiring another manager for their personality, reputation and man management was more important than any particular tactical philosophy.
Mourinho’s mere presence adds another layer of intrigue to Madrid’s participation, and that will be boosted by the fact he’ll face two of his former clubs in Inter and Roma during the league phase.
While claiming back the Spanish title will probably be their priority, there’ll also be an expectation that they improve in Europe at the very least.
Since winning the Champions League in 2024, Madrid have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage in successive seasons; they haven’t gone three campaigns without a UCL semi-final since a run of six consecutive last-16 exits from 2004-05 to 2009-10.
Whatever happens, life is rarely dull when Mourinho’s around.
Will Rodri Take Barcelona to the Next Level?
Barcelona have gone 11 full seasons without winning a major European trophy (we aren’t counting their 2015 UEFA Super Cup success). They last had a longer such drought between 1965-66 to 1978-79, when they had 12 campaigns without any continental glory between Fairs Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup wins.
They’ve won six La Liga titles in that time, so it’s not like they’ve been completely without success. European glory has eluded them, though, and that feels like the next logical target after sealing back-to-back domestic crowns.
