Sanjiv Goenka’s Super Giants set to buy BBL team

Sanjiv Goenka’s Super Giants are reportedly targeting a franchise in the Big Bash League (BBL), as the RPSG Group continues to expand its presence across major T20 competitions around the world. The group already has teams in the IPL, SA20 and The Hundred, and is now understood to be exploring an entry into Australia’s premier domestic T20 league.

The Melbourne Renegades could become the next addition to the Super Giants family. Cricket Australia has approved the sale of the Renegades licence to private investors, with a 100 per cent stake set to be offered. The new ownership is expected to take charge from the 2027-28 BBL and WBBL seasons, while the upcoming season will continue under CA's caretaker management.

The reported interest from the RPSG Group comes as Cricket Australia begins its first major push to introduce private ownership into the Big Bash League. The Renegades are the first franchise being taken to market, with CA retaining control over key areas including international scheduling, player availability, salary caps and media rights.

The governing body will also have the power to approve or reject potential investors. The sale will not affect the upcoming BBL or WBBL seasons, meaning the Renegades will continue to operate under their existing identity during the 2026-27 campaign.

CA's new model allows state bodies to decide whether they want to pursue private investment in their respective teams. The Melbourne Stars, Hobart Hurricanes and Perth Scorchers are among the franchises understood to be open to investment, while the Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers are currently reluctant.

For Sanjiv Goenka, acquiring a BBL franchise would further strengthen a cricket portfolio that already stretches across three major overseas leagues.

Sanjiv Goenka's Lucknow Super Giants' IPL details

The RPSG Group entered the IPL with Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the 2022 season after acquiring the franchise for Rs 7,090 crore. LSG made the playoffs in each of their first two seasons, finishing fourth in 2022 and 2023.

However, their fortunes declined thereafter. They finished seventh in 2024 and 2025 before ending the 2026 season in 10th place with only four wins from 14 matches. Rishabh Pant, who had taken over as captain in 2025, stepped down from the role following the 2026 campaign.

The franchise is coached by Justin Langer and plays its home matches at the BR SABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Sanjiv Goenka's SA20 & The Hundred investment details

Sanjiv Goenka's international expansion began with Durban's Super Giants in South Africa's SA20 competition. The RPSG Group acquired the Durban franchise for around $11 million in 2022, with the team based at Kingsmead Cricket Ground.

The group then expanded into The Hundred, acquiring a 70 percent controlling stake in the Manchester Originals. The franchise was subsequently rebranded as Manchester Super Giants for the 2026 season.

The Manchester side enjoyed immediate success after the rebranding, finishing second in the league stage before defeating Sunrisers Leeds in the Eliminator. They then beat Trent Rockets by five wickets in the final to win their first Hundred title.

With IPL, SA20 and The Hundred already part of the Super Giants empire, a potential move for a BBL franchise would give Sanjiv Goenka's group another major foothold in global franchise cricket.
