Unlike the 384,000 British military personnel killed during World War II, All Creatures Great and Small's Tristan Farnon was fortunate enough to return home to his family and friends in Darrowby – and in fine physical condition.
But the same couldn't be said for his mental state. While the vet remained tight-lipped throughout most of season 6 about what he'd witnessed on the front line, there was a moment in the finale when his emotions finally came rushing to the fore, as he confided in Siegfried about the source of his unrest.
While out on patrol, Tristan and his squad – including his best friend, Billy – stumbled upon a stretch of land covered in mines, a discovery that could have wiped them all out.
But in the end, only one survived – and that happened to be Tristan, whose life was saved by Billy just before Billy, too, met a grisly end.
"There was a mine right next to me and if Billy hadn't screamed, I would have been killed," he recalled.
"I got a medal because I managed to save a few chaps, but Billy wasn't one of them," he said, referencing his Military Cross. "He saved me, but I couldn't save him. The Cross should be his, not mine."
But while he still carries the scars of Billy's death, slowly but surely, Tristan is beginning to make progress.
"He seems to be coming to terms with what we now know as PTSD, which wasn't really known of back then" Callum Woodhouse told Radio Times when asked where we find his character emotionally in season 7. "It hadn't been given the official terminology. People just didn't know what to call it.
"And I think it's always something that's going to stay with him, but he's found a way to live with it and not let it dictate his life in the way that it did last season."
Woodhouse continued: "This series is about him maturing, becoming his own man and finding his own way in the world rather than what he thinks other people want him to be doing.”
But in typical Tristan fashion, there will still be plenty of "high jinks" on the cards – which will be music to Siegfried's ears, we're sure.
"He still likes his trips to The Drovers and things like that," he added.
Talk then naturally turned to Charlotte, who Tristan is still happily in a relationship with at the start of the latest instalment.
"She's really, really great for him and understands what he's been through, and is a really good support for him," he added. But back in June, Woodhouse previously hinted that there could be trouble in store – which the season 7 trailer recently confirmed.

So, could season 7 spell the end of Tristan and Charlotte's relationship?
"Sometimes you have to take a risk," advises Siegfried as the brothers once again share another intimate moment, which is seemingly becoming something of a habit, we're pleased to see.
But what will that risk entail? And will it work?
