ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Students in several large school districts around the Rochester area return on Tuesday, including Pittsford and Brighton.
News10NBC’s Garrett Chan spoke with leaders of both school districts about what’s new this year and how they’re adapting to the rise of artificial intelligence. See more of our coverage:
What’s new in Pittsford and Brighton
Some changes are coming across the nine schools that make up the Pittsford Central School District. That includes offering free breakfast and lunch and a new sustainability initiative.
“As a part of our sustainability initiative, we’ve had LED lights installed, HVAC, air quality work at all of our schools, and the other big change that we have here in Pittsford is the joining of the National School Lunch Program,” Superintendent Shana Cutaia said. “So this year our secondary students will also have access to free breakfast and lunch.”
This school year marks the first full year at the helm for Cutaia. Already, she’s putting in place structural changes within the district — such as a new department of pupil services.
“That’s allowing us to just remove silos between special education supports, mental health support, residency. The goal is to help to streamline supports so families know who they can access,” Cutaia said.
At the Brighton Central School District, not much is changing this year. Superintendent Dr. Kevin McGowan said the focus is consistently delivering on its top priorities — academic and student support.
“We’re really thinking a lot about how do you create a more engaging experience for students,” McGowan said. “We are really focused also on student attendance. We have a very high rate of attendance in this district, but for a small subset of students and a struggle with them who are chronically absent, we know that we need to get them here to school more often.”
AI in school
New York City schools have temporarily banned the use of artificial intelligence for elementary and middle school students. However, many local school districts are taking a different approach, teaching students to incorporate AI technology into their learning without relying on it too much or using it to cheat. Brighton schools are planning to embrace AI for learning, McGowan said.
“It’s really not about ignoring a tool that will be a part of their lives from here on out and part of our adult lives from here on out. This is the next iteration we need to effectively prepare kids to use it the best that they can,” he said.
Pittsford schools are working to carefully balance AI use to help it become a learning tool.
“Holding that standard high and making sure that there’s a balance, a balance of assessment approaches, a balance of instructional approaches is always going to be critical,” Cutaia said.
Both districts told News10NBC that success goes beyond their long track record of strong academics — but how well they can stick with their strategic plan and ensure students are supported day after day.
