The film later takes a darker turn when Union soldiers return to Fort Sedgwick. Dunbar is captured after the soldiers see him wearing Sioux clothing. His diary has also been taken, leaving him unable to prove his identity and explain his relationship with the Lakota.
Dunbar is charged with desertion. The Lakota eventually rescue him, but he understands that he will now be hunted by the Army as a traitor. He leaves with Stands With A Fist.
The film closes with text explaining that the last of the free Sioux would surrender at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, in 1876.

According to Variety, the restoration was carried out by Zurich-based Cinegrell in collaboration with the Locarno Film Festival through its Locarno Heritage project and the film’s international sales agent, K5 International.
The restored director’s cut was screened on Aug. 7 at the Piazza Grande venue as part of Locarno’s Histoire(s) du Cinema section.
