Chicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has clubbed yet another home run, and he made some Cubs history in the process.
Crow-Armstrong hammered a pitch in the fifth inning of Sunday’s game against the Miami Marlins over the right field fence and just inside the foul pole, and he entered his name into a couple of exclusive clubs in the process.
According to Baseball Reference’s Stathead tool, Crow-Armstrong is the first Cubs player to hit 40 or more home runs in a season in more than 20 years. The last Cubs player to achieve that feat was Derrek Lee, who did so in 2005, and appropriately enough Crow-Armstrong matched the feat on Lee’s birthday.
He joined two other truly remarkable clubs as well with the home run. According to Stathead, Crow-Armstrong is just the second left-handed hitter to club 40 or more home runs in a season for the Cubs, and is the first since Hall of Famer Billy Williams did so during the 1970 season on the North Side.
Finally, Crow-Armstrong is just the second Cubs player to hit 40 or more home runs in a season before the age of 25, joining none other than Ernie Banks on that exclusive list.
The home run also left Crow-Armstrong just one home run behind Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies for the league lead in that category. No Cubs player has led the majors in home runs since Sammy Sosa hit 500 long balls during the 2000 season.
Crow-Armstrong and the Cubs will finish up their series with the Marlins on Sunday before heading to Milwaukee to take on the division-leading Brewers in a three-game series beginning Monday afternoon.
