ROCHESTER, N.Y. — This week’s Rochester in Focus, News10NBC’s Lynette Adams starts off the episode by talking with a doctor and others about sickle cell disease as September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. The second interview is with the new president and CEO of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO). Then, the show features an interview with the director of the RIT Center for Urban Entrepreneurship. Lastly, it’s a visit to Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church, talking with a minister about a new guide for worship.
The show features a discussion on sickle cell disease during National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Lynette spoke with a doctor, an advocate, and someone who lived with the disease about why little is still known about sickle cell and who it affects after decades of research. The segment also highlights an upcoming event two weeks away where people can support those living with the disease and celebrate the lives of people who lost their battle to sickle cell.
The show also introduces Tonya McBride Robles, the new president and CEO of the RPO. McBride Robles has been on the job for about three weeks. Lynette interviewed her earlier this summer about her new role and the challenges facing women seeking to rise to this rank in an orchestra. She is only the second female president and CEO in the RPO’s 104-year history.
Lynette also featured an archived interview with Ebony Miller, the director of RIT Center for Urban Entrepreneurship. Miller discussed a competition this month and the support the downtown center can offer small businesses. Miller also explains what the program offers, along with workshops, AI training, tax tips, and other aspects.
The show closes with Dr. Thomas Green, who created a 52-week guide for worshipers, choirs and music ministries. Green spent his career in healthcare, government and community advocacy, but music is his lifelong passion. He spent the past 25 years as the minister of music at Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church and shared his wisdom and encouragement for others doing the same work.
