Auburn defeated Baylor 17-16 on Saturday night in Atlanta, but not everyone was pleased with how the game went.
The Tigers led for much of the evening, but numerous mistakes from players and coaches prevent them from creating any separation. In the end, it was a much-needed win for Alex Golesh in his debut, but some fans and media were still left unimpressed.
Auburn‘s offense was mistake-prone, with quarterback Byrum Brown throwing 3 interceptions. The Tigers went 10-of-18 on third down and 0-for-1 on 4th down.
The fourth-down miss was a big one — a failed fake punt in the second half that gave Baylor tremendous field position.
Here’s some of the negative reaction to Golesh’s debut:
The only difference between this year’s Allbarn team and last year’s is Alex Golesh isn’t tweeting out his golf scores!
— Tommy Metthe (@TMetthe) September 5, 2026Hey Alex Golesh,this isn't USF anymore bud.
— (337) Sports Guy (@GDavisDTR) September 5, 2026Did we really think Alex Golesh was the guy, Auburn?
— Bear Bear (@BearBearSEC) September 5, 2026Alex Golesh is Walmart Sean McVay
— Units Talk (@UnitsTalk) September 5, 2026It’s nice to know that even under Alex Golesh, it is in auburn’s dna that they will not play a normal football game
— Jalen Reeves (@LivForJReeves10) September 5, 2026Alex Golesh is hearing the boo birds in his first game as Auburn's coach. The Tigers' fake punt is stuffed, and Auburn comes away with no points once again after a decent drive.
— Nathan King (@NathanKing247) September 5, 2026From a football perspective, that is a top 3 worst call I’ve seen a head coach make by Alex Golesh. The most obvious fake punt I’ve ever seen. From the 33 yard line…
— ParlaySafari (@ParlaySafari) September 5, 2026 x.com/JFergusonAU/status/2096378678401777817is it concerning that an Alex Golesh coached team allegedly locked in to every detail looks just as bad as a team Hugh Freeze team where he just golfed all the time
— Brice (@dBriceJ) September 5, 2026On the other hand, Auburn did secure a win over Baylor for the second consecutive season — a victory that could prove meaningful to Auburn as it plays for a spot in the postseason throughout the remainder of the year.
Auburn’s defense forced a pair of turnovers and held Baylor to just 4.4 yards per play.
Auburn will host Southern Miss in Week 2 for Golesh’s home debut.
