White Sox Minority Owner Justin Ishbia has unveiled a potential new stadium site for the team as part of a mixed-use development in the South Loop dubbed “The Railyards.”
The project along the Chicago River would transform what Ishiba called “long-underutilized rail and industrial land” into a major economic development opportunity. In addition to the ballpark, the development would feature health care facilities operated by Northwestern Medicine along with transit-oriented residential, commercial and retail development.
“The Railyards is about turning idle land into opportunity — for patients who need better access to care, for a team and its fans who deserve a dynamic Riverfront home, and for a city that needs jobs, housing, and economic investment,” Ishbia said in a news release, in part. “This is a Chicago project, built by and for Chicagoans, and we are excited about its potential.”
Under the proposal, the ballpark would serve as a year-round gathering spot integrated into the surrounding community, with open space, retail, and dining designed to keep the area active year-round.
Ishbia said the concept is in its early stages and is beginning a multi-month study and feasibility review evaluating a range of factors from transportation to environmental impact. If feasible, the plan could be presented to White Sox leadership for consideration when its current lease ends.
Ishbia has an agreement with current White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf that gives him an option to purchase the franchise after the 2034 season. Reinsdorf has final say over all decisions until then.
The proposal has already been met with criticism by some city leaders.
Cook County Commissioner John Daley and 11th Ward Ald. Nicole Lee said, “Today’s announcement from Justin Ishbia represents nothing less than a betrayal to the community that the White Sox have called home and relied upon as their most loyal fan base for 116 years…”
Both represent the Bridgeport community, which the White Sox have long called home.
Ald. Jason Ervin, whose 28th Ward includes the majority of “The Railyards” site, released the following statement, in part, “I look forward to engaging with the White Sox, 28th Ward residents, and my colleagues in the City Council about a development that has the potential to create good-paying jobs for Chicagoans, improve our transportation infrastructure, and provide a long-term home for one of our city’s storied franchises…”
