Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a 72-hour halt tostrikes on Kyiv starting at midnight on Saturday, the Kremlin said, amidrenewed US effort to revive stalled negotiations aimed at ending the war inUkraine.

    Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Russia’s TASS newsagency that the pause was linked to preparations for US envoys Steve Witkoffand Jared Kushner to visit the Ukrainian capital on Sunday.

    Witkoff and Kushner arrived in Moscow on Saturday carrying aUS proposal to end the war and are expected to travel to Kyiv the followingday. The trip marks their first visit to the Ukrainian capital since USPresident Donald Trump returned to the White House last year.

    Trump said yesterday during a press exchange in the OvalOffice at the White House that he had dispatched the two envoys to Moscow andKyiv to explore whether an agreement could be reached.     The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, welcomed theplanned talks, saying Ukraine wanted discussions with the US delegation to be“as constructive and substantive as possible.”

    “We need to look for realistic options on how to bring thiswar to an end,” he said.

    Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov saidWashington should consider what he called changing battlefield conditions thatfavor Moscow. “The US administration must take into account the realities onthe ground,” Ryabkov told TASS, arguing that developments were moving againstKyiv.
